The 2024 Alberta Winter Games will see 1800 athletes competing in 18 sports over 3 days of competition. The city of Grande Prairie in partnership with the County of Grande Prairie, and the MD of Greenview are proud to host the games February 16-19 2024.
From a medical perspective we will stand up a poly clinic and will have first-response teams at each sporting event. At the poly clinic our team will ideally be comprised of a physician, RN, OT/PT, and athletic therapist. At the sporting events, our ideal team will be 1 athletic therapist, and 1 first responder (First aider or paramedic depending on the risk matrix). Some high risk events will also have an ambulance on standby.
We are looking for Athletic Therapists interested in volunteering at the games, at the poly clinic, sport-side, or both. The polyclinic will open on the afternoon of Friday the 16th, though competitions won’t begin until the morning of Saturday February 17th.
At the polyclinic, volunteer medical personnel will work as part of a multidisciplinary team assessing and treating athletes from the games. The polyclinic is intended to manage assessments, observation, and treatment that doesn’t require the level of care of the full emergency department.
In addition to the primary role of patient care, the polyclinic serves as a hub for the medical team, hosting documentation, kit replenishment supplies, radios, etc. Shifts are anticipated to be from 4-6 hours, and ideally, volunteers will take 1 shift per day over the games, though that is not mandatory.
Sport-side teams will report to the polyclinic to pick up medical supplies and radios, then to the sporting venue. Each venue will have a medical booth set up with visibility to the competition. Approach protocols will be outlined in the medical manual, and may vary from sport to sport. The medical team is primarily responsible for the athletes, though may treat spectators should the need arise. Minor injuries will be assessed, treated, and charted on site. More serious injuries may be referred to the polyclinic, or sent to the ER either by games transportation, or by ambulance.
Volunteers will be required to review training and orientation prior to the games, which will include concussion assessment training, medical team orientation, and other specific training components. The training plan is still in development, but it is anticipated that it will be offered in person, online, and recorded to accommodate volunteers schedules and locations.
